Top 10 Favorite Figures of 2020

Despite the craziness of the pandemic, 2020 did have a lot of good releases. I was able to condense my list down to my 10 favorites that were released this year (I still have two new releases that are yet to be delivered; Figuarts Ultraman Z Alpha Edge and Monsterarts Biollante special color version). Anyway, here are my top 10 favorites of these last 12 months.

10. NECA Ultimate Pinhead

From their series of horror figures, NECA's Ultimate Pinhead was the release for Hellraiser fans. Plenty of accessories, 2 different heads and good articulation made this demon a winner.

9. Marvel Legends Doctor Doom

Marvel Legends gave us 2 Doom figures this year, the FF Wave version and the retro card one. I got me this FF Wave version, which features both a modern and retro head, several pairs of hands and a gun. Excellent sculpt, color & details, plus a custom cape (courtesy of Daredevil19customs on Instagram) made this Marvel villain great.

8. S.H. Figuarts Wonder Woman 84

Even though the film was a letdown, this figure from Tamashii Nations turned out better than expected. With an improved face sculpt that actually looks like Gal Gadot, vibrant colors and good articulation, the movie version of the Amazon princess was done justice.

7. Marvel Legends Retro Wave Spiderman

Marvel Legends finally gave us a Spiderman figure that had great articulation. With butterfly joints, ball jointed upper torso and drop down thighs, this Spidey could be put into all sorts of fun, expressive poses. The only thing that would've made it perfect would have been more hands. But what they gave us was pretty damn impressive.

6. Tie: S.H. Figuarts Ultraman Ace & Ultraman Titas

Out of all the new Ultraman releases Tamashii Nations gave us in 2020, these two were my favorite, and I had a difficult time choosing between them, so they were tied. Great, accurate sculpts and nice accessories made these Ultras the best of the best for me. Ace completed the lineup of the original 6 brothers, and Titas is one of Tsubaraya's more unique looking Ultraman.

5. S.H. Figuarts Freddie Mercury Live Aid Version

The 2nd Freddie Mercury that Tamashii Nations gave us was a stunning improvement. A better painted face sculpt, great articulation and his classic Live Aid look made this a must have for fans of the Queen frontman. Mercury is one of my favorite action figures in my collection.

4. S. H. Monsterarts Nargacuga

This critter from Monster Hunter World turned out fantastic. Wonderfully detailed sculpt, impressive articulation and extras made this creature a big surprise. If Tamashii Nations put as much attention to detail to all their Monsterarts releases as they gave to Nargacuga, this line would really fly.

3. NECA Godzilla 1989

The final Godzilla figures that NECA gave before their license expired were awesome, some of the best that NECA have released. While the face sculpt wasn't entirely accurate, it was still nice, and everything else was great. This figure showed off how much they improved since they first started producing Godzilla related items.

2. NECA Godzilla 2003

As much as I loved the 89 figure, I ended up loving the 2003 even more. And I wasn't initially going to get it. The sculpt of this release was just fantastic. He looks big and mean, and is practically import quality. This has become one of my favorite Godzilla figures in my collection.

1. S.H. Figuarts Momotaros

This figure was a huge surprise. I preordered it because it looked cool, and once I had him in hand, I was beyond impressed. The articulation was flawless, making him so much fun to pose. With the addition of many extra hands and his sword & coffee cup accessories, he was the perfect figure to own. Momotaros is an example of the heights that Tamashii Nations can reach. This figure rocks!

So there is my list. 2020 ended up having some really great action figures. I look forward to what 2021 has to offer.

Titanic Creations Yongary 1967

This figure was released in late December, and I got it about 2 days before the New Year, so I'm counting it as a 2025 release. It is the Titanic Creations version of the Korean kaiju Yongary, Monster From The Deep. The film was released in 1967 as a Godzilla ripoff, with several ideas copied from the Gamera series, such as his tusks, his ability to fire a stream of flames from his mouth, and even firing a laser beam from his horn, similar to the slicing one used by Gyaos. The film is pretty goofy, but Yongary, like most of those Asian monsters, was pretty cool (to me, at least), so I was psyched that someone finally made a figure of this lesser known kaiju. When Titanic Creations put it up for pre-order, they announced a series of tiers, where they would add accessories when a certain number of orders were met. Enough fans ordered him, so that Yongary ended up with a shit ton of stuff, making him absolutely worth the price. In addition to the kaiju, you get a flame breath effect, ...

RicSan Custom Toys Kyōrū Kaiju (Titanosaurus)

My latest kaiju figure purchase is the Titanosaurus made by Ricsan Custom Toys. I own and love the Varan & Gabara, so of course I had to preorder this one when it was available. He was delivered earlier this week. This kaiju hails from the last Godzilla film of the Showa era, 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla. The Black Hole aliens are back, rebuilding their robot in another effort to take over the planet. They enlist the help of an ostracized Earth scientist named Mafune and his daughter Katsura, who are able to control an aquatic dinosaur named Titanosaurus. They plan to use both kaiju and mecha to attack Japan. Titano was a cool monster, with his tail that opened into a fish fin, and he would use it to create whirlpools in the sea, and high winds on land. I'm hoping that S.H. Monsterarts makes one for the 50th anniversary of the film, but when I saw this Ricsan Custom version, I couldn't pass it up. Titanosaurus (called the Kyōrū Kaiju), comes in a white box, with its n...

Help Me… I’m Possessed (1974) / #Missingcouple (2024)

I've watched some weird, obscure horror movies throughout my life. I can now add this lurid 1974 schlockfest to that growing list. In a castle in the desert, Dr. Arthur Blackwood runs a sanitarium filled with mentally disturbed patients (as well as staff). He claims to be working on finding a way to cure people of any violent tendencies they have, and brags about his younger sister, innocent, child-like Melanie, as evidence that his treatment works. When she was a child, their parents had to keep her locked up and chained in the basement, to control her violent fits. Now that he's cured her, Arthur has his wife Diane come to the castle to meet Melanie, so that they can be one big, happy family. Diane begins to grow suspicious that something is amiss after a Sheriff shows up investigating the murder of 2 local teens, and sets about on her own investigation, hoping to uncover the sinister secrets that she feels her husband is hiding. Help Me... I'm Possessed is an outrageous,...
