One of Ultraman Tiga’s more famous foes has gotten the highly articulated treatment by Tamashii Nations. This is their first Ultra kaiju they’ve released in over a year, so it’s nice to get one after so long. Golza was initially done in the older and out of production Ultra Act line, but that figure is now hard to find (and quite pricey). So here’s another chance to get one. Is it worthy? Let’s investigate.
The figure, while in the 1:12 scale, is still a bit smaller than expected. He’s about the same height as most Ultras, and a bit shorter than figures like Black King.
As far as his sculpt, it’s pretty decent and accurate. His head resembles a pyramid, with gray chest armor and shoulder pads and white bumps along his body. There is some reddish paint scruff on the top left side of his head and a few small paint drops on his tail. Everything else is painted and sculpted well.
His articulation includes head and neck on ball joints, ball jointed lower jaw, ball joint upper torso and waist that has great ab crunch and decent side to side range, ball jointed shoulders and thighs, upper arm swivel, joints at elbows and knees, ball joint claws, and a few joints on his upper shins and ankles. The tail attaches to the torso via ball joint, and there seems to be bendy wire inside the tail. I would’ve preferred a multiple ball jointed tail, such as what they gave Gomora. This would have allowed for more dynamic poses, and considering how well Tamashii Nations have improved tail joints, they should have gone this route. The bendy wire doesn’t have much range, so it’s a bit pointless. His mouth can open very wide, but that can cause him to have a bit of an underbite. Everything else is good, especially the torso and head.
As for accessories, Golza comes with none. They should have included his head beam, or even a small Guts Wing, such as what the Ultra Act figure came with. Figuarts have released a set of Guts Wings that are pretty cheap, and I did order those (they should be delivered soon), but they should have included them with the figure, instead of yet another bare bones release.
S. H. Figuarts Golza is a decent figure, minus the small size and tail articulation. They could have given us more, so this brings his rating down. Still, he’s a cool kaiju and I’m glad to have a highly articulated version of him, as well as another Ultra monster in my collection. Hopefully the next Ultra kaiju they decide to release gets more attention to detail.
