The first figure of 2023 is the new Space Sevenger from Tamashii Nations. He was technically released on the last week of December, but anything from that late in the year I’ll count for the next year. When the pre-orders for this guy first went up, I wasn’t initially planning to get it, since I already owned the first release and found it a bit disappointing, due to the bad leg articulation that made it difficult to stand on its own. Then when this one dropped, I saw a few reviews on YouTube that showed that his legs were more solid, so I went ahead and got me one. Now that I have him in hand, I can say that he is an improvement over the older release.
The paint job on this guy is different, with mostly greys and silvers, and a few coats of wash here and there to bring out details. The older release had black on the shoulder, elbow, thigh and leg joints, as well as the square panels on his upper body. For accessories, he comes with much more this time. Included are 5 interchangeable left hands, 6 interchangeable right hands (including fists, open palm, and various holding), 4 pairs of interchangeable eyes, a swipe stick for popping out and changing the eyes, an electromagnetic baton, a firearm, a bayonet type of blade, his drill fist, and plastic pipe parts that can be worn on his torso like a harness. The added weapons make this figure much more fun and expressive.
Articulation includes head on a joint that can look up and to the sides, ball jointed shoulders and thighs, a butterfly joint on each shoulder that allows the arms to come forward, ball jointed elbows and knees, ball jointed upper torso that can turn fully around, crunch forward, backwards, and to the sides, ball pegged wrists, and ball jointed ankles. The figure can achieve various action, kicking and one-legged poses easily, and is able to hold them without collapsing, something the older release wasn’t able to do.
The joints on the knees are tighter and more solid, which is what causes the figure to hold poses much better than the older release, which was a pain to pose without easily toppling over. See the video demonstration below to note the big difference.
Ultimately, S. H. Figuarts Space Sevenger is quite an improvement over their first attempt. Better joints, more accessories and hands make him the superior release. I’m glad to see they learned from their past mistake and improved his knees, instead of giving us the same figure with a different paint job and accessories. He’s not as expressive as the Minipla model kit, but if you’re a fan of this cute little robot, he’s absolutely worth getting to add to your Ultraman Z collection.
