Last week I received the Father of Ultra. This week I got the villain Ace Killer from the Ultraman Ace series to complete my late August preorders. For this spiky dude, Bandai gave him the deluxe treatment with a ton of accessories.
Ace Killer appeared in episode 14 as a robot assassin created by the evil Alien Yapool in an attempt to finally kill Ultraman Ace. He first lured the Ultra brothers to a desolate planet and entrapped them on crosses, stealing their powers so that he can easily defeat Ace, who was busy fighting the monster Baraba on Earth. He resembles an armored cyborg, painted red and gold, with spiked shoulders and a larger left hand with long fingers. The set includes multiple pairs of hands (4 left and 5 right), an alternate wrist with Ultraman Jack’s bracelet, a sharp blade weapon called the Battle Sai, and 3 beams for Killer (Emerium, M87 Beam and a Specium beam), as well as 2 hands for Ace that have his Space Q attack beam that he used to kill Ace Killer. There are 5 crosses complete with chains to hold the Ultra brothers. These are attached via ball joint to a rock, and can sway left and right. And finally, golden metal parts to transform Ace into Ace robot, which Killer used to test out his powers in preparation for his battle with Ace. This release got just about everything to recreate scenes from that classic episode, except for the kaiju Baraba, which I own a bootleg version of, so I’m good. All these accessories is one thing about some S. H. Figuarts releases that make them so worth it. Ace Killer was given the deluxe treatment.
And now for the articulation. As expected, Ace Killer receives the same upgraded joint system as most of their modern releases to give the engineering more bang for your buck. Included are butterfly joints, drop down thighs and double jointed elbows and knees so that he can achieve the most expressive poses. The golden armor parts on his arms and legs are loose pieces, and while I expected them to be somewhat of a burden, surprisingly, they turned out to be less cumbersome than I anticipated. They mostly stay in place and don’t shift around all wildly, making his joint movement relatively smooth. The spiked armor on his shoulders are attached via hinge, so they won’t get in the way when moving his arms. You should have no problem achieving fun, unique poses with Ace Killer.
S.H. Figuarts Ace Killer turned out to be another winning release from Bandai. It was about time that Bandai gave us another character from the Ultraman Ace line, and they went all out to ensure that the customer would be satisfied with this purchase. He looks great, moves smoothly, and is packed with extras galore. I’m hoping that the Ace series gets more figure releases (Alien Hipporito?!?), so that the 5th Ultra brother can finally have some more of his co-stars, like Ultraman and Ultraseven have. I would love an articulated King Crab, Bronken, Doragory, or even Yapool. Ace Killer was a wise choice for their first Ace foe, and here’s hoping any future foes get as much love as this release.
