The first flick I saw was another dogman doc from Aaron Deese and Shannon LeGro, the ones who did the one about dogman sightings in Texas. This one covered the infamous area known as The Land Between The Lakes, a campground where an alleged infamous murder of a family took place.
The 2 hosts go to the area to talk with various witnesses and see reported areas where sightings took place. They talk about the history of the Land Between the Lakes, how people who were living there were kicked out by the government, losing their homes. They then talked about the infamous early 80’s attack, where a family of 4 were allegedly killed by a dogman while camping, and how the government supposedly covered it up. Thinking that this story is an urban legend internet hoax, they attempted to find any evidence that the family ever existed and that the murder actually took place. They did find that the government shut down the campground in 1982, around the same time the incident. They interviewed witnesses that saw the beast, and other strange things, and one witness who claimed that 38 people have lost their lives due to “animal attacks”. They also spoke on the phone with someone named Roger, who claims he was with the family during the attack, and he stated that people have sensationalized the story to make it seem more dramatic than it was.
Overall, it was a pretty good doc, with some interesting tidbits (at one point, the hosts saw a mysterious black unmarked government helicopter flying in the sky), and witness interviews (though one girl came off as not very believable). If you're into paranormal shows about cryptids (and are especially interested in the Land Between the Lakes story) then you might enjoy this one. I streamed it on Tubi.
The next one I watched was this early 80’s horror on YouTube, from the channel 42nd Street Films Grindhouse, about a Satanic cult in a small town.
17 year old Nancy lives with her mother and her step-father, a police officer with a drinking problem. After coming home drunk and making the moves on Nancy, she packs her stuff and runs away, hoping to hitchhike to California. She gets picked up by 2 young guys in a van, who convince her to go with them in the opposite direction on their vacation. They eventually end up in a small town, stealing groceries, running away from the law, and camping out in the woods. What they don’t know is that people in that town are mysteriously disappearing, ending up the victims of a Satanic family that lives in the area.
This movie was cheesy but a lot of fun. The credits stated Tom Savini did the make-up effects, and while there was a decent amount of blood and gore, it was nothing like the more elaborate stuff he did for bigger budget films like Friday the 13th, Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow, and various other greats of the era. It also didn’t help that the acting was mostly bad. This one actress looked like she was smiling/laughing while getting her throat slashed, instead of the appropriate expression of horror. There was also this super cheesy song that played several times during the movie, completely out of place with the horror elements. The entire thing was like a discount version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, featuring a crazy, murderous family, and a heroine who must desperately escape from their clutches. Entertaining b-movie thrills.
