I came across this lesser known 1960's thriller about a woman who marries an artist, and soon begins to grow suspicious of the company he keeps.
Blonde and beautiful Lilli marries sculptor Emile. Upon arriving home from their nuptials, they find that his house is filled with all his kooky, weird friends, who throw him a big party. Among them are Emile's creepy brother Max, who was recently released from a mental asylum, and Helene, an old flame of Emile's who continues to flirt with him. Then there's Emile's weird housekeeper Hajmir, who gives Lilli the creeps. After a series of strange events, including mysterious phone calls in the middle of the night, as well as a private investigator looking into the disappearance of a woman who hung out with Emile's gang of misfits, Lilli begins to suspect that someone wants her dead.
The movie is overdramatic and ridiculous. The "scares", if you can call them that, are pretty lame, with most of the scenes having Lilli scream hysterically and then passing out. Between fending off the creepy advances of some of Emile's pervy, touchy-feely pals (including his freaky brother Max), and escaping pathetic murder attempts (there's a pool scene that's particularly laughable), this story comes off as eye-rollingly silly, yet still entertaining. The histrionic, soap opera-style bad acting and drama help to keep things from being a total bust. It's not a great flick (think Corman's A Bucket of Blood, but very cheaply shot, and without any of that film's sarcastic wit), but at a little over an hour, it's amusing enough to hold your attention. I streamed it on Tubi.
The next one was an early 80’s documentary about UFO’s and aliens, hosted by Brad Steiger.
Steiger, an American writer of fiction and non fiction works about the paranormal, hosts and narrates this exploration into the world of extraterrestrials. It’s filled with photos and slides of alleged UFO’s, various people connected to the phenomenon, as well as artistic renderings that portray various occurrences and drawings based on eyewitness reports of aliens. Steiger tries to take a spiritual approach to the subject, ultimately surmising that many humans are descendants of ancient alien races that visited the planet millions of years ago.
The problem with this doc is that it’s filled with ridiculous theories that claim that Bigfoot sightings are often associated with UFO’s, ghost and manifestations are caused by elves (?!?), UFO occupants are descendants of reptilian creatures from the past, and referring to aliens as Ufonauts. A simple Google search of Steiger will reveal that he’s been widely criticized for making outrageous and far-fetched claims without scientific evidence, or in short, a quack charlatan. His voice also has a slightly goofy quality that makes it hard to take any of the bullshit he’s peddling seriously. It’s basically him talking over a series of slides, with one interview towards the end with some woman (I didn’t bother getting her name) who is just as whacked as he is. It gets dull pretty fast, and is ultimately pretty unremarkable. There are much better alien and UFO documentaries out there. I watched this bore fest on YouTube, from a channel called UFO TIMELINE PROJECT. Check this out at your own risk.
