Even More Old Horror Favorites for Halloween

With just a few days left until Halloween, here are some more old horror films you might want to check out. 'Tis the season to be spooky.

THE PROWLER
This underrated slasher from the 80's is about a WWII vet who gets revenge on his girlfriend who broke up with him by murdering her and her new guy. 35 years later, a graduation ball is being held at the same location, for the first time since the murders. The mysterious killer returns, slaughtering a new set of teens. This movie boasts some pretty graphic kills.

THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON
This old 50's monster flick is about a scientist who accidentally gets exposed to radiation while doing an experiment. Now, every time he gets exposed to the sun, he transforms into a scaly, murderous monster. This flick is fun and the creature looks cool. One of my favorite 50's monster flicks.

MAUSOLEUM
Fun 80's flick about a woman who's the victim of demonic possession. The kills are fun and bloody, the dialogue is ultra cheesy, the demon looks hokey as fuck, and so does the possessed woman with her glowing green eyes and awful acting.

HORROR HIGH aka TWISTED BRAIN
Nerdy high school student Vernon is being bullied at school by classmates and even teachers. One day he's forced to drink one of his experimental potions and transforms into a homicidal monster. Now, Vernon sets about to get revenge on all who messed with him. This movie is a lot of fun and there's something satisfying about watching jerks get slaughtered.

SUMMER OF FEAR
An old made-for-TV film from the 70's stars a teenage Linda Blair as a young girl who begins to suspect that her cousin who's come to live with them is a witch. I used to watch this often as a kid and is directed by Wes Craven.

THE SECRET KILLER aka EYEBALL
This 1975 Umberto Lenzi giallo is about a knife wielding maniac in a red cape and hood who starts murdering passengers on a bus tour by gouging out their eyes. It's a fun flick with some good kills.

THE KILLER SHREWS
I love this 50's creature feature about people on an island trapped by a pack of hungry, ravenous giant shrews. The monsters are basically dogs wearing really cheesy masks.

THE SHE CREATURE
Another 50's creature feature about a hypnotist who turns his female assistant into a sea monster by hypnotizing her soul back to prehistoric times. I think the creature suit looks pretty cool. If you enjoy these old monster flicks, you may enjoy this one.

BEWARE THE BLOB
This 70's film is supposedly the sequel to The Blob, and it is one of the cheesiest, most ridiculous flicks you'll ever see. Directed by Larry Hagman (yes, the J.R. Ewing of Dallas), the Blob returns to wreak more havoc and eat more innocent people. It's laughable from start to finish. This one is of the so-bad-its-good variety.

STAGEFRIGHT
Another Italian horror film, this one is a great slasher about dancers who are rehearsing for a show. One of them is murdered and the killer dons the outfit of an owl and then kills someone else, right in front of everyone. The cast are horrified and spend the rest of the night trying to escape from the locked theatre and survive being the killer's next victim. The owl suit is quite creepy and the kills are good and plentiful.

KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS
This 70's flick stars William Shatner as a small town vet who comes to discover that murderous arachnids are invading and going on a killing spree. This one is pretty entertaining, has some good make-up effects (the spider bites) and is another childhood favorite of mine.

PSYCHIC KILLER
A man is jailed for a murder he didn't commit. When he's finally released, he discovers that his elderly mother, whom he was very close to, has passed away. He begins to use Astral Projection techniques he learned while incarcerated to get revenge on those who set him up. This one boasts some funny murders, including a bimbo who gets scalded to death in a shower, and stars Julie Adams of Creature from the Black Lagoon fame.

THE BLACK ROOM
Back in the early 2000's, I used to collect some of those compilation DVD's that had a bunch of horror films on them. That's how I discovered this one. It's a surprisingly creepy flick about a couple who rent out a room with the intention of seeking victims. It's not well known and yet I found it well done and eerie, featuring an electronic synth score that helps to set the mood.

IT CAME FROM HOLLYWOOD
This is a comedy tribute that showcases a bunch of old b-movies. Each segment is hosted by famous comedians from the 80's, including Gilda Radner, Steve Martin, Cheech and Chong, Dan Akroyd and John Candy. They show clips and basically make fun of them and tell jokes. I saw this at the movie theatre as a kid on a double feature and I loved seeing clips from all these low budget horror and monster flicks.

OVERLORDS OF THE UFO
In previous entries I listed a few 70's documentaries that covered the paranormal/aliens. Well now I have to list my absolute favorite one. I must warn you, if you're looking for a serious discussion about the UFO phenomenon, look elsewhere. This one is extremely bad and laughable, with some ridiculous theories, including invisible flying predators that are responsible for cattle mutilations. If this movie hasn't already lost all credibility by the halfway mark, then the nail in that coffin comes when it features charlatan Uri Geller. I've watched this so many times and I absolutely love it.

TALES OF TERROR AD
My final selection isn't a film at all, but rather an old TV ad from the 80's. Back then I used to watch a lot of horror and monster films on USA Network and they would show this ad during the nights. It's for one of those 900 numbers to call and hear scary stories. It uses clips from old horror films and has a cheesy voice over. I always remembered this fun ad and I was psyched when I found it on YouTube, so here it is.

S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla Minus One

Right before the opening of the new Toho film Godzilla Minus One in the US, I received the figure from Bandai Tamashii Nations from that film. It was officially released last weekend, and about a day before that, some photos were popping up online of the final product, appearing with a very dark and bad paint job. Drama rose up in one of the kaiju figure groups I'm a part of, with one idiot in particular proclaiming that the S.H. MonsterArts line was done, despite having not gotten the actual figure in hand before he could judge for himself. After multiple posts trashing the figure and stating that Bandai was dead, he received the figure and then gave it a good rating (8 out of 10), making himself look like a damn fool in the process. I admit that those initial photos had me worried, but I decided to wait until I saw some YouTube reviews to see how it actually turned out to make my judgement (I pre-ordered it from a site where you don't pay for it until it's actually in sto

S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla 1991 Shinjuku Decisive Battle version

The latest Godzilla figure I pre-ordered from the S.H. MonsterArts line has arrived. It is the 1991 Shinjuku Decisive Battle version, to go along with the Mecha King Ghidorah release from earlier this year. While the suit is almost the same as the one used in 1989's Godzilla vs. Biollante, they made some slight adjustments. Compared to the BioGoji figure, this one is much thicker, therefore, he does look different from that other release. His sculpt is the classic 90's era Heisei look, with small head, thick thighs, large dorsal spines and a long tail. Like all the other Godzilla suits of that decade, he has a cat-like face, both cute and menacing. While the King of the Monsters has had multiple looks throughout his 50+ years, it's the Heisei era that seems the most iconic. Artwork, toys, comics, etc, have all utilized this particular design. Similar to the 89 suit, this 91 figure has a small set of dorsal spines, followed by a much larger one, and then gradually getting sm

S.H. Monsterarts Rodan &Mothra 2019 set

My Rodan and Mothra set finally arrived after being delayed for a few weeks. After spending a few days going over them, I've had time to really assess them. They're both decent, but there are some issues. Let's dig in! As far as sculpt, Rodan fairs better than Mothra. Everything from the wings, face, torso and legs on Rodan are well done and nicely capture his condor-like look from the film. The face, legs and body of Mothra is sculpted in a very simple, dull manner, lacking any real detail or pattern. Part of it I think is that her body is so small it doesn't leave much room for details. Another thing that was pointed out to me by someone on social media is that Monsterarts may have based their Mothra on early concept artwork as opposed to her actual look in the film. The result is a smooth, crude design that, upon close inspection, resembles a Play-Do sculpture. If this was the case, Tamashii Nations really should've waited until they saw w
