Here's another list of some more old horror and monster flicks that I enjoy, with links.
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD
You can't make a list of horror films without including at least one from the "Godfather of Gore", Lucio Fulci. This one is about a priest that hangs himself and unleashes undead hell upon a small town. It includes such infamous scenes as a woman vomiting her own intestines and a guy getting a drill through his head. City is one of Fulci's best!
TORMENTED
This black and white flick from 1960 is about a jazz pianist who's ex girlfriend is threatening to ruin his newfound happiness with his new girl by blackmailing him. While on a lighthouse at night, she accidentally falls and he refuses to help her, causing her to plunge to her death into the sea. Now, her ghost is hell-bent on tormenting him and getting her revenge. This one is a lot of fun and features a hilarious scene with her decapitated head accusing him of murder.
DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE
This one is about a crazed guy who lures women back to his home to burn them to death. Similar to Maniac, it features a killer who was the product of an abusive mother. This one has some great kills and is one of the underrated slashers of the late 70's/early 80's era.
THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE
A scientist gets into a car crash with his girlfriend. In a desperate attempt to save her, he takes her head and keeps it alive in his lab until he can find a suitable body to transplant it on. This is one fun, sleazy film that also features a deformed monster and silly science.
BURIAL GROUND: THE NIGHTS OF TERROR
Another Italian zombie film, this one is sleazy, gory and makes no apologizes about it. The undead are unleashed when a professor opens a crypt. Now, his guests have to fight for their lives against an army of rotting, creepy zombies. Burial Ground is famous for it's over-the-top blood and gore and a very creepy kid and his sick obsession with his mother.
PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE
Ed Wood is famous for his really bad movies, and Plan 9 is his Citizen Kane. I really love this goofy flick, in which he throws in everything from zombies, UFO's, bad acting, stock footage, scenes that transition from night to daytime, fake sets and the late, great Bela Lugosi. Plan 9 is so damn fun and I hope that in the afterlife, Ed Wood knows, decades later, just how much his movie is truly loved and considered the ultimate cult film.
THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI
The silent classic from Germany, about a sinister Doctor who joins a traveling carnival to showcase Cesare, his somnambulist, who makes predictions about the future. Conrad Veidt as Cesare is wonderfully memorable, with his lanky body and creepy make-up. This is a weird, creepy slice of German Expressionism and my favorite silent horror film.
THE SPELL
This 70's made-for-TV flick is a childhood favorite of mine. It's a Carrie rip-off about a picked on teenage girl who begins to use telekinetic abilities to punish her bullies. It stars a very young Helen Hunt as the younger sister, and Lee Grant as the mother.
MYSTERIES FROM BEYOND EARTH
Another one of those 70's documentaries that covers topics ranging from flying saucers, the Bermuda Triangle, Witchcraft and Ghosts. I always enjoyed the older docs that covered this stuff, they seemed more dramatic and fun.
THE ZODIAC KILLER
Not to be confused with David Fincher's 2007 Zodiac, this one is from the early 70's and makes no effort to hide that it's a cheap attempt to cash in on the real life murders. Many of the kills featured in this cheesy flick didn't even happen. Still, it's an enjoyable slice of grindhouse sleaze.
THE BEING
This early 80's flick is about a detective who's trying to solve a string of grisly murders and disappearances. It turns out that there's a monster on the loose that's responsible for the carnage. This is a fun cult flick with a cool, slimy monster and some good kills.
SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
Another 70's made-for-TV offering, this one is about a young woman who enrolls in a school to investigate her sister's suicide. There, she finds creepy teachers and strangeness, leading her to uncover the evil secret of the school. This movie is super cheesy and I used to watch this one all the time as a kid. It features a very young Kate Jackson and Cheryl Ladd before they became Charlie's Angels.
KILLERS FROM SPACE
I really love this 50's sci fi silliness about a pilot (Peter Graves) who comes to find out he was captured by aliens and attempts to stop their evil plan of conquest. The aliens look ridiculous with their bulging plastic eyes, their evil scheme includes stock footage insects and reptiles, and it's another slice of 50's style bad science.
ALLIGATOR
Forget Jaws, this is the greatest animal attack film ever put to celluloid. Well, at least I think so. There's so much glee to be had as you watch this oversized animal eat and slaughter people left and right, with the climax taking place during a party that's hilarious. You know that urban legend about the baby alligator that gets flushed down the toilet and ends up in the sewer, underneath a city? Well here it is, in all it's zany glory.
