My first new figure of 2021 is the Mafex Hush Batman black version. The blue version had dropped last year and when the reviews came out and I saw how good it was, I was going to get it. But then I saw that a black version was going to be released in January, so I pre-ordered this one instead, since I prefer this color scheme. The only difference between this and the previous release (besides the color) are that this one comes with a gargoyle stand, while the prior one came with an extra unmasked Bruce Wayne head.
Batman looks great. The details of the sculpt and the paint apps are clean. He sports a subtle black wash throughout his torso, arms and legs that help to give them definition. He's mostly grey and black, with bright yellow utility belt. The cape has 4 wires inside (2 on outer edges, 2 in the middle) that allow you to bend it into some really cool poses. Even the bottoms of his boots are sculpted. I did notice that on the head with closed mouth, the mask line rests just a touch above the nose; not sure if that is deliberate or a miscalculation in the paint. Either way, it's not an issue. I think he looks just fine.
Batman's accessories include: a gargoyle prop with a stand that plugs into it, 2 heads (closed mouth and gritting teeth), a long grapple hook, a short grapple hook, 2 sets of batarangs, and 7 pairs of hands (fists, gripping, relaxed, open, holding grapple gun, holding claw blades and curled fingers). The gripping hands are almost closed but have a small enough opening to place the end of the batarangs, and they can also be placed between the fingers of his relaxed and curled finger hands. Mafex outdoes Figuarts in the extras department, that's for sure. None of this overpriced web exclusive nonsense with a solitary figure with just 2 or 3 pairs of hands.
Batman's articulation is darn good. He sports a ball jointed head and neck, ball jointed hinged shoulders with butterfly joints, upper arm swivel, double jointed elbows and knees, ball jointed upper torso, waist swivel, ball jointed thighs with swivel, ankles that pivot forward, back and to the sides, and wrists on peg joints that move. His belt is attached by a peg at his back, so it's loose in the front and doesn't impede his movement. You can get Batman in crouching, one-legged, running, kneeling, action poses, and with the wired cape, you'll have a blast putting him in fun, comic style scenes. I had always wanted to get myself a Batman figure, but waited for a really good one that checked off all the sweet spots for me. And Mafex have delivered.
Since the blue version came out last year and I watched many reviews of it on YouTube, I already knew that Mafex delivered a great Batman figure, and having him in hand, he met all my expectations. They're also releasing Hush versions of Hush himself, The Joker, Superman and Catwoman (which I'm considering getting). If the rest of the figures in this series are as great as Batman, then fans of the Hush story arc will be pleased indeed. I've been looking forward to this release dropping, and now that he's here, he did not disappoint. Well done, Mafex!
