Tamashii Nations had announced a new Godzilla 1989 figure sometime last year, when they also showed photos of their release of a repainted Biollante figure. The Godzilla is smaller and in scale with their other figures, and is sculpted and painted accurately. Official photos have been released and it looks great.
It will be up for pre-order soon. The face, body, eyes and proportions seem to be very accurate to the '89 suit. MonsterArts had previously released a larger version of 89 that had light up dorsal spines. This one does not have that feature, it's simply the figure. But it's still gorgeous.
In other news, I recently acquired the 2012 San Diego Comic Con exclusive burning orange Godzilla. I was able to find him at a decent price through one of the Facebook Godzilla figure groups. It's the same sculpt as MonsterArts very first Godzilla figure, only with a translucent orange sculpt.
The only color highlights on the figure are his eyes, which are a darker orange, and tongue, which is red, and his fingernails, toes, and dorsal spine which are shades of yellow. I also noticed that the individual segments of the tail seem to be different shades, dark, then lighter, then dark, then lighter, etc. That's a really cool, unique touch that helps the figure to stand out.
When held up to the light, it really shines through the translucent material, giving him a warm, inner glow. Also, even without light, you can see the joints within the body, as they are a yellow color. That's another cool little touch that this figure has.
All of the joints work fairly well. You can get him into a good swimming pose. The only real "issue" is that the neck joint, when moving the head too far forward or to the side, tends to have a visible gap, allowing you to see the ball joint that it rests on. Everything else on the figure is fine. The arms, with a combo of ball jointed shoulder, upper thigh swivel, single jointed elbows and ball jointed wrists have the most range. The box he comes in has a fiery illustration on the back, with some info about the artist and the sculptor of the figure.
This San Diego Comic Con exclusive is a very unique addition to my Godzilla collection. He's definitely much more interesting than my 2019 Burning Godzilla version, which probably would've benefitted from a more translucent material and unique shading. I'm glad I got this guy, and I'm happy I was able to find him at a good price. Hopefully the new '89 goes up for pre-order soon so I can get me one. I'll be watching Godzilla vs. Kong at the end of this month on HBO Max. Other than that, it's still early in the year, so we'll have to wait and see what other possible Godzilla news may come. Sayonara for now.
