This latest weird creature was ordered from Entertainment Earth. It's a monster from the 1968 flick The Green Slime, a science fiction yarn about astronauts who land on an asteroid that's on a collision course with Earth in an attempt to destroy it before it hits the planet. Once they do, they head back to their space station Gamma 3, not realizing that one of their suits has a green slime living organism attached to it. When the clothes are put into the decontamination chamber, the energy causes the slime's cells to mutate and grow into a funky tentacled monster that feeds on energy, can electrocute prey with its tentacles, and can easily reproduce. Before long, a bunch of these critters are running loose on the space station, while our heroes figure out a way to stop them. The movie is very cheesy but fun, with one subplot revolving around a love triangle between 3 of the main characters. The monsters are your typical Japanese tokusatsu creations; in other words, wonderfully weird. The flick even has a groovy theme song. When I saw that this figure was available, and for pretty cheap, I had to get me one.
The figure is pretty accurate to the suit from the movie, with it's one red eye in the middle, a series of smaller eyes underneath, 2 long tentacles that end in claws at the front, and the texture found throughout the creature's body. It's only 3¾ inches tall, but it's wavy tentacles can stretch out quite far. Monstarz did a great job capturing the likeness of this weird thing.
The articulation department is where they decided to have fun. Both the arms on the side can move around (they simply plug into a socket and can be popped off). The tentacles have 4 swivel points each, so you can move, twist, and curl them in all sorts of directions and give the critter a lot of expression in how you want to display it, whether you want them forward, up, or to the sides. This makes posing it that more enjoyable. There are no joints on the leg or the body, but those tentacles are enough to keep you busy and entertained.
The figure comes in a collectible box that displays artwork from the film's movie poster. There are no other extras that it comes with, but the nice box and even nicer figure are just enough.
Monstarz Green Slime Retro figure is absolutely worth it if you're a fan of this movie and it's goofy monsters. Though the figure is small, it's still quite affordable, and with those articulated tentacles to up the fun factor, it's hard to resist. They are still available on Entertainment Earth, and I'm sure other places probably carry it as well. Here is a link for a YouTube video that features clips from the film and it's groovy theme song. Enjoy....
