Tonight I watched this cheesy, late 80’s slasher. A businessman opens up a camping resort in a remote wilderness area, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. He hires a tracker named George to oversee the place, as well as his son David to keep an eye on things. The day it’s supposed to open, trouble already begins when they find a dead dog in the water supply. Determined to not lose money, they go ahead with their plans and let the campers in to set up. Little do they know, a wild man who’s been living in the wilderness doesn’t want his area disturbed, and he begins to dispose of the campers.
The flick is filled with the usual assortment of annoying characters, including teenagers, an old military man and his wife, and some bikers and their girls. And true to form, you look forward to when they start to die. David, the businessman’s son, becomes increasingly convinced that something is wrong, but George insists that they keep the park open. It turns out that George has a reason for wanting to stay in the area, and it has to do with an incident from his past.
The acting is generic, the dialogue is bad, the music is super cheesy and sounds as if it was composed on a cheap, homemade keyboard, but the kills are a lot of fun. It takes a bit of time for the action to ramp up, but once it does, it’s an enjoyable ride til the end. Most of the murders are committed with weapons and booby traps the wild man set up, as well as some unexpected ones, like a runaway tractor, and an RV that blows up when the gas line is cut. If you’re in the mood for a more obscure, corny retro slasher, check this one out, it’s quite amusing.
Ahh, yes, Memorial Day. One of those times of the year when everyone wants to gather around for a good horror flick.
ReplyDeleteThis looks and sounds so wonderfully schlocky that I'm tempted to track it down. How did you watch it? Any particular streaming service showing it?
I forgot to say, but it's available to stream on YouTube. Just look it up under the title Memorial Valley Massacre.
