Just in time for Halloween, the infamous lycanthrope from that goofy film Face of the Screaming Werewolf is here. I had watched that movie some years ago and absolutely loved it, so I wanted to get this figure ever since I became aware of its existence. There were two variants, a blue shirt version and a red shirt version. As you can see, the red shirt one is now mine.
My friend Jake, who lives in Kentucky, was out exploring a toy shop with his friend. They were filming an episode for their page called Gen X Chase, where they go searching for retro, hard-to-find collectibles. He ran across this figure, and knowing that I wanted one, picked it up and mailed it to me. Now he’s here, ready to celebrate Samhain with the rest of my action figures.
The header card is various shades of red and pink like his shirt. It sports a photo of the wolf’s face on the front, and artwork from the movie poster on the back. The role was played by Lon Chaney Jr. Towards the bottom left, there’s a drawing that shows him lifting up a screaming man, as if ready to throw him. This scene never happens in the film, so I found it funny and amusing.
As for the figure, he looks great. His red and blue checkered cloth shirt is torn and frayed in certain areas, as are the bottom of his pant legs, to duplicate that authentic werewolf aesthetic. The top of his shirt is held together by a small Velcro patch. It can be removed, revealing a muscular plastic torso underneath. His skin is a light chocolate brown shade, sporting orange and grayish paint across his face. His eyes are green, and his mouth is molded bearing 2 white fangs. His hands are molded to duplicate hair, as are his feet, which are more monkey like in appearance. I know that the blue shirt version is molded in a darker brown, so it’s nice that MEGO decided to release variants that are different apart from the clothes.
The articulation is the same as other MEGO figures, with head on a swivel, shoulders and thighs held together by thick rubber bands inside the mold, single jointed elbows and knees, swivel hinge wrists and ankles, and the waist on a round peg that allows for full turns and ab crunches. He can sit, kneel, balance on one foot, crouch and twist, allowing a variety of posing options. For having old school engineering, he’s able to move reasonably well.
MEGO Face of the Screaming Werewolf is a fun action figure. I love that they made one of this rare, lesser known character. He looks great, is fully poseable, and comes packaged with a unique header card that I will definitely be keeping. A huge shoutout to my buddy for finding and getting him to me. Now I own a cool werewolf that fits nicely with my other horror figures, ready to celebrate Howl-O-Ween.
