S.H. Monster Arts Mecha King Ghidorah Shinjuku Decisive Battle Special Set

It's been a while since I've gotten a new release figure. Tamashii Nations decided to give us an updated version of their Mecha King Ghidorah, with an added accessory that the previous release didn't include (though this one doesn't come with the 3 little Dorat figures, the creatures that were used to create King Ghidorah in the 1991 film, that this character also hails from). I received this rad dude a few days ago, so let's dive in and check him out.

The sculpt is accurate to the monster's suit, mostly silver and gold, everything painted and sculpted very nicely. The mechanical head has some red hightlights on the neck, as well as a rocket inside the mouth, and translucent green eyes. The wings are a nice gold color, with silver frame. There's a translucent circular segment on the chest, where the cyborg was piloted from within. In the film, after Godzilla defeated King Ghidorah, Emmie, who was from the future, went back to her time and revived Ghidorah's body, which was still underneath the sea, with a very faint heartbeat (I won't get into how unrealistic it was that he was able to survive that long for over 200 years). Anyway, using their modern technology, Emmie and the Futurians turn Ghidorah into a cyborg, giving him a mechanical head, body, wings, shin guards and mechanical tail ends, and send him back to 1992 to defeat Godzilla. The figure is made of the usual ABS and PVC material, with die cast on 4 hinged doors on its torso where he shoots out grabbing cables.

The accessories include 4 bendy wire cables with articulated claws that can be pegged into holes underneath the die cast hinged doors on its chest. 2 small ones are to grab onto Godzilla's arms, the larger ones are for his legs. He also has 1 large hard plastic hook that attaches to his mid torso. You simply pull out the panel in the middle of the body and peg this attachment into place. It has a large claw on the end with articulated mandibles for grabbing Godzilla's chest. Also included is a stand to help hold the cables up by themselves, though they don't require a stand when holding their prey. The new accessory included in this release is a pair of alternate battle-damaged wings, from the scene where Godzilla blasted holes into them before being dropped into the ocean. You swap them by pulling the regular ones out, and pushing the other one into the wing compartment until it snaps into place. Changing them is very easy, something that I was initially concerned about, but thankfully, that's not the case.

The articulation includes his three multi-segmented necks, the lower jaws are on ball joints, the tongues on the 2 side heads can move up and down, ball-jonted torso that can twist to the sides and crunch forward a bit, ball jointed thighs, single jointed knees, slight ankle pivot, and two multi-ball jointed tails. The wings are on hinges that can flap forward and backwards, and also include a circular hinge that allows them to tilt up and down. The articulation is the same for the battle-damaged wings as well. One thing I noticed is that everything stays in place fairly well. I wondered if the neck joints would pop out easily like the tentacles of Biollante, but they stayed put while posing them, so that was a pleasant surprise. Due to the design of the robotic neck, that one can't bend down as far as the other two.

Just like the reissue of Final Wars Gigan, this Decisive Battle Special Set Mecha King Ghidorah is fantastic, sporting great paint and sculpt, fun accessories, and good articulation. For anyone who skipped out on the initial release, this new version is absolutely worth getting. I'm glad that I made it a part of my collection. Tamashii Nations has teased a 1991 Godzilla to go along with this figure, but thus far, no further news about it has dropped. If you have the 1989 Godzilla, which I do, it should pair nicely with the 3-headed cyborg, as that suit is almost the same, other than some minor details. If you don’t have that one,  then the 1994 and 1995 versions also work with Mecha King Ghidorah’s grabbing accessories.

Titanic Creations Yongary 1967

This figure was released in late December, and I got it about 2 days before the New Year, so I'm counting it as a 2025 release. It is the Titanic Creations version of the Korean kaiju Yongary, Monster From The Deep. The film was released in 1967 as a Godzilla ripoff, with several ideas copied from the Gamera series, such as his tusks, his ability to fire a stream of flames from his mouth, and even firing a laser beam from his horn, similar to the slicing one used by Gyaos. The film is pretty goofy, but Yongary, like most of those Asian monsters, was pretty cool (to me, at least), so I was psyched that someone finally made a figure of this lesser known kaiju. When Titanic Creations put it up for pre-order, they announced a series of tiers, where they would add accessories when a certain number of orders were met. Enough fans ordered him, so that Yongary ended up with a shit ton of stuff, making him absolutely worth the price. In addition to the kaiju, you get a flame breath effect, ...

RicSan Custom Toys Kyōrū Kaiju (Titanosaurus)

My latest kaiju figure purchase is the Titanosaurus made by Ricsan Custom Toys. I own and love the Varan & Gabara, so of course I had to preorder this one when it was available. He was delivered earlier this week. This kaiju hails from the last Godzilla film of the Showa era, 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla. The Black Hole aliens are back, rebuilding their robot in another effort to take over the planet. They enlist the help of an ostracized Earth scientist named Mafune and his daughter Katsura, who are able to control an aquatic dinosaur named Titanosaurus. They plan to use both kaiju and mecha to attack Japan. Titano was a cool monster, with his tail that opened into a fish fin, and he would use it to create whirlpools in the sea, and high winds on land. I'm hoping that S.H. Monsterarts makes one for the 50th anniversary of the film, but when I saw this Ricsan Custom version, I couldn't pass it up. Titanosaurus (called the Kyōrū Kaiju), comes in a white box, with its n...

Help Me… I’m Possessed (1974) / #Missingcouple (2024)

I've watched some weird, obscure horror movies throughout my life. I can now add this lurid 1974 schlockfest to that growing list. In a castle in the desert, Dr. Arthur Blackwood runs a sanitarium filled with mentally disturbed patients (as well as staff). He claims to be working on finding a way to cure people of any violent tendencies they have, and brags about his younger sister, innocent, child-like Melanie, as evidence that his treatment works. When she was a child, their parents had to keep her locked up and chained in the basement, to control her violent fits. Now that he's cured her, Arthur has his wife Diane come to the castle to meet Melanie, so that they can be one big, happy family. Diane begins to grow suspicious that something is amiss after a Sheriff shows up investigating the murder of 2 local teens, and sets about on her own investigation, hoping to uncover the sinister secrets that she feels her husband is hiding. Help Me... I'm Possessed is an outrageous,...
