Music For Halloween

As Halloween gets closer, I thought I'd list off some favorite Halloween, horror themed and generally creepy music selections. Since as long as I could remember, I've always loved music, and anything with a weird, goth beat or creepy lyrics always caught my attention. Here are a few selections.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Halloween
This band has recorded many creepy, weird songs throughout their career. Siouxsie Sioux is a punk/goth goddess whom I've loved for many years. Here is the song titled Halloween, off their 1981 album Juju.

Sonic Youth - Halloween
This is a slow, strange tune, sung by Kim Gordon (another music goddess). It's off their album Bad Moon Rising, which features a scarecrow with a burning jack-o-lantern on the cover. It wasn't until I read Gordon's book that I understood why this song was titled Halloween. She wrote it while attending a Halloween party in LA and watching Henry Rollins perform with his band Black Flag. The lyrics are about her experience/thoughts watching him perform.

Rob Zombie - Dragula and House of 1000 Corpses
I couldn't include a list of horror themed music without a few selections from Rob Zombie. Anyone who's followed his career knows that he's a long-time horror fan. Clips from horror films and shows have shown up in his videos, his song titles sound like horror films, and he's even ventured into making several of his own, including The Devil's Rejects, and a remake of Halloween. I got to see him twice in concert in the mid 2000's, and honestly, he's one of the best live performers I've ever seen. His shows pulled out all the stops, with fireballs shooting from the stage, a screen showing clips of monster movies in the background, and dancing girls wearing skeleton masks. Here are two of my favorites,  Dragula, and the title track from his first horror film.

John Carpenter
You cannot list off great horror music without including the one and only John Carpenter, who composed music for pretty much all of his films. His Halloween theme is instantly recognizable, and he composed equally impressive tunes for his other movies as well. Here's a selection of some of his best.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Nick Cave is another artist who's known for creepy, weird music. In 1996, he released Murder Ballads, an album composed entirely of songs about murder. This track, titled The Curse of Millhaven, is hilarious, where the title character spends it's runtime confessing about all the murders she's committed. This tune is bonkers and so much fun.

Goblin
Here are the Italian legends, who achieved worldwide fame by composing music for the films of Dario Argento and other directors. Their soundtrack for Suspiria is a huge part of what made that film such a classic. Here is it's soundtrack, as well as another favorite track of mine that they composed for the film Contamination.

The Cure
The 4th studio album from this legendary goth band, released in 1982, is chock full of creepy, odd tunes, with equally creepy lyrics to match the dark mood. This is my favorite song from this record.

She Wants Revenge/Bauhaus Mashup
This is one of the best remixes/mashups ever, combining a song from the debut album of She Wants Revenge, with Bauhaus' classic tribute to vampires and the count himself, Bela Lugosi. The video that was made for this is also a lot of fun.

Ministry - Every Day Is Halloween
I'll end this list with one of my all-time songs for Halloween lovers, Ministry's classic Every Day Is Halloween. Because for us horror and monster fans, it really is every day.

Halloween is about one week away. Get out and enjoy, as it really is the most wonderful time of the year!

Help Me… I’m Possessed (1974) / #Missingcouple (2024)

I've watched some weird, obscure horror movies throughout my life. I can now add this lurid 1974 schlockfest to that growing list. In a castle in the desert, Dr. Arthur Blackwood runs a sanitarium filled with mentally disturbed patients (as well as staff). He claims to be working on finding a way to cure people of any violent tendencies they have, and brags about his younger sister, innocent, child-like Melanie, as evidence that his treatment works. When she was a child, their parents had to keep her locked up and chained in the basement, to control her violent fits. Now that he's cured her, Arthur has his wife Diane come to the castle to meet Melanie, so that they can be one big, happy family. Diane begins to grow suspicious that something is amiss after a Sheriff shows up investigating the murder of 2 local teens, and sets about on her own investigation, hoping to uncover the sinister secrets that she feels her husband is hiding. Help Me... I'm Possessed is an outrageous,...

Titanic Creations Yongary 1967

This figure was released in late December, and I got it about 2 days before the New Year, so I'm counting it as a 2025 release. It is the Titanic Creations version of the Korean kaiju Yongary, Monster From The Deep. The film was released in 1967 as a Godzilla ripoff, with several ideas copied from the Gamera series, such as his tusks, his ability to fire a stream of flames from his mouth, and even firing a laser beam from his horn, similar to the slicing one used by Gyaos. The film is pretty goofy, but Yongary, like most of those Asian monsters, was pretty cool (to me, at least), so I was psyched that someone finally made a figure of this lesser known kaiju. When Titanic Creations put it up for pre-order, they announced a series of tiers, where they would add accessories when a certain number of orders were met. Enough fans ordered him, so that Yongary ended up with a shit ton of stuff, making him absolutely worth the price. In addition to the kaiju, you get a flame breath effect, ...

RicSan Custom Toys Kyōrū Kaiju (Titanosaurus)

My latest kaiju figure purchase is the Titanosaurus made by Ricsan Custom Toys. I own and love the Varan & Gabara, so of course I had to preorder this one when it was available. He was delivered earlier this week. This kaiju hails from the last Godzilla film of the Showa era, 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla. The Black Hole aliens are back, rebuilding their robot in another effort to take over the planet. They enlist the help of an ostracized Earth scientist named Mafune and his daughter Katsura, who are able to control an aquatic dinosaur named Titanosaurus. They plan to use both kaiju and mecha to attack Japan. Titano was a cool monster, with his tail that opened into a fish fin, and he would use it to create whirlpools in the sea, and high winds on land. I'm hoping that S.H. Monsterarts makes one for the 50th anniversary of the film, but when I saw this Ricsan Custom version, I couldn't pass it up. Titanosaurus (called the Kyōrū Kaiju), comes in a white box, with its n...
