While browsing at One Piece Card Game store, I came across the latest variant of Godzilla 1954 from S.H. MonsterArts, the movie graphic plus version, so I decided to snag it. Out of all the movie graphic plus figures they've dropped, this was the one that appealed to me the most.
It's the same sculpt and mold as the original 1954 release, only with a different paint job. The body is a few shades darker, but the biggest difference is the white shading in the mouth and on the translucent spikes, to duplicate how he'd look if he were shooting a blast of atomic breath. Unlike the brown colored movie poster version that came with a beam and a small plane, this release comes with only a cardboard cutout display with 2 different sides. One side features a duplicate of the movie poster, the other has a black & white photo of Godzilla. Another thing about this release that I like is that the eyes are more aligned. The reissue of the original release and the colored movie poster version have those eyes that are looking down at an angle. From the side view it's ok, but from the front view, both eyes are facing different directions. This figure actually looks straight ahead when facing forward. I know the eyes downward is supposed to be suit accurate, but I prefer him not looking like he has Exotropia.
The articulation is the same as the original 1954, sporting multiple ball joints in the neck and tail, arms and legs that can turn fully around and out, a crunch at the torso, ankle pivots, and a jaw that opens and closes. The 54 mold always had good articulation, but considering it's an older sculpt, and how much their engineering has improved over the last few years, it would have been nice if they upgraded some of those joints, such as deeper bends in the elbows, some butterfly shoulder joints like on the 2000, and maybe some more range in the torso. Still, the figure moves pretty well, and considering how stiff the 1954 suit was, this figure can pose much more fluidly than that bulky suit ever could. Out of all the repaints they've done, this is a sculpt and mold that's still fairly nice.
S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla 1954 Movie Graphic Plus version is a pretty good figure, despite an older sculpt and engineering. If you missed out on either of the past releases, then this version is a good opportunity to pick up an articulated figure of this iconic Godzilla that started it all.
